“It
made me feel this big,” my grandmother holds her index finger a few
centimeters over her thumb. “When he said that, I felt like a puppet.”
We’re sitting in a restaurant, a nice restaurant, and my grandfather is telling me that we’re too sensitive.
“It’s a compliment.”
To
my grandmother and myself, two different generations, he says we need
to appreciate it. These comments from strange men who don’t know us are
harmless.
How can you explain this to a man?
“It’s
like this,” I attempt. “You’re in a dark parking lot in the middle of
the night, alone, unlocking your car and a man comes up to you out of
the shadows. He’s not wearing a jacket and he smells like the street
and he says to you, ‘Nice watch.’ ”
That’s a cat call.
